unplugged

My apologies for the long blog hiatus. It has been entirely unententional. I'm suffering from a defunct wireless router which has rendered me e-disabled. As a result, I've been relegated to relying on more primitive means of technology such as the telephone and television. Fortunatley, I've discovered a coffee shop humble enough to offer free wireless. I been here so often I think i'm becoming a regular adding to the millieu of west-coast coffee shop stereotypes already in place. There are, inevitably, a host of student types keenly focused on their macs with ear buds appropriately in place. Then there are the lululemon donning excercise addicts purchasing only water.  There are the young professionals working out of the office for the day, the retired/semi-retired taking long sips of their decafs and, well, many others you can probably predict.  Most interesting though, is the gambling addict in the corner. This German (I think) young man spends his days logged in to some online gaming site fully outfitted with his headset occassionally yelling "scheise." He's always here regardless of what time I come in. I'd introduce myself but the mystery is too interesting.

Shoulder: the latest.

Got my xray results back. The good news is I haven't broken any bones. The bad news is I've seperated my shoulder. *shudder . . . ouch* yeah, it's a little different than a dislocated shoulder in that you can't just pop it back into place. Instead, I have several weeks of physio ahead of me. Hopefully the therapist will be able to get the soft tissue in my shoulder to settle back into place so my collar bone can return to it's normal position. That's right, my collar bone is a little higher than it should be. There's a little nobby bit sticking out over my shoulder joint that I thought was simplly a bit of residual swelling. Nope. That's my collar bone portruding upwards. Now it's totally grossing me out. Gosh. I'll be praying it heals properly . . . umm maybe you can join me. I'd hate for this to become a chronic issue.

Looks like the ski season is over for me.

I've never been so uncomfortable with myself.

skis, moguls and rotator cuffs

Went skiing up at Grouse yesterday and, in addition to taking in the spectacular view of the city at 2700 meters, I  took in a spectacular all-too-close-up view of a deep mogul comprised mostly of packed snow. the mogul itself wasn't that much of a spectacle however, my unavoidable tumble down the mountain was. I bounced off some of the three foot deep mini-mountains and cleared off the tops of others. Each time it felt like i was hitting blocks of ice. I was a juggernaught of poles  and skiis flying down the moutain in a cloud of white. In fact, i'm certain i reached terminal velocity at one point b/c I was traveling so fast I even caught up to and passed the skiers that went before me. In the end, however, it was the fatefull initial fall that landed my shoulder square on the top one of the packed moguls that did caused me the most pain. The doctor says I damaged my rotator cuff and possibly injured my colar bone. To help figure it out, she sent me for xrays this morning. While I don't have the official results, I did overhear the xray tech go on about a dislocated shoulder. I don't think he was aware that i was in the room. I'll keep you posted.

For the curious, go here.

despised and rejected

That's how I felt on boxing day after 3.5 hours in the travel agent's office attempting to find a last minute deal ANYWHERE in world that didn't require a visa to enter it. Had I been willing to drop an easy $2000 for one flight I could have gone anywhere. But I didn't, couldn't, do that. So I left, feeling the pending emptiness of 10 days off with nothing to do begin to weigh me down . . . i don't do well with free time for those who are unaware.

I had tried everything--online resources, travel agents, personal friends with connections, etc.--nothing worked out. I started to think of alternatives to the travel option that would make me feel productive durring my time between jobs. I thought of taking a couple of seminar classes on writing or intro to design. Or finally tackling my books-I-should-read-but-am-intimidated-by list. nothing felt right. But I was warming up to the idea.

Then, yesterday everything came together. A random internet session produced a fabulously affordable trip to New York city. Long story short, me and my friend lisa leave for 5 grand days in New York city on thursday. *sigh* i'm so thrilled. I've never been.

any sightseeing suggestions?
